Vegan Kitchen Essentials

Cooking at home is healthy and very affordable. As a vegan there are so many great recipes to try with a wide range of fruits and vegetables to choose from. To get the most out of plant based nutrition it is worth investing in a few cooking appliances that will make crafting these dishes a lot easier and even fun.

A high powered blender. Essential to smoothie making, the go to and most trusted brand is the Vita-Mix. Great for more than smoothies this blender also grinds nuts and seeds into butters and spreads.

Food processor. A great appliance for vegan cooking. Many new to plant based nutrition hear that foods like sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds etc. are a highly nutritious source of protein, but don't know how to effectively include them into their meals. A food processor takes care of this as it can be used to make pates, spreads and dips from foods like seeds which are easy to include in many dishes.

A multi-purpose salad spinner. Consuming leafy green vegetables provide a wide range of vitamins and minerals as well as precious fiber. With a great multi-purpose salad spinner it is easy to create a wide range of easy to consume salads from even tough cruciferous leafy greens like kale, cabbage, brussels sprouts, and more. An appliance like this is indispensable as it not only spins salad clean but can chop shred and julienne too.

Immersion Blender. For fans of soup, an immersion blender can be a great and convenient tool for meals like this. For example with some steamed or roasted winter squash and preferred seasonings in a pot, force this blender through the mix and have a fresh and rich soup in a few minutes. This appliance makes the task of making soup and purees a much easier as there is no need to transfer between the full stand up blender.

A large capacity stock pot. Great for making large amounts of soup or vegetable broth, this is also great for efficiently cooking pasta. Look for ceramic pots as these are free from the toxic chemicals that come from non-stick cookware.

Ceramic cookware. As mentioned above ceramic cookware is a great choice as it does not leech the potentially toxic chemicals into food when cooked. These are also easy to clean. One piece of advice, when stacking for storage place a cloth or oven-mit between each pan as this will prevent any scratching of the surfaces.

A high quality pressure cooker. This is likely the most versatile home cooking appliance. It can be used to cook grains, steam vegetables, cook pastries, even make yogurt. The popular go to brand is the Instant Pot. This appliance is a great investment for vegan cooking.

A coffee grinder or miniature blender. This is great for processing dry nuts and seeds as a garnish or binder in baked dishes. Consider a miniature blender which has this capability as well as other included multi-purposes like blending and mixing.

Mason jars. These are essential to making fermented foods like sauerkraut and yogurts. These are great for effectively sealing foods and they can be submerged in hot water. These jars are also great for making fruit preserves.

A great juicer. Juicing is a very healthy and good habit. There are so many highly nutritious fruits and vegetables out there but it can be hard to prepare them in meals because they may have a tough skin or have a strong bitter flavor. Vegetables like turnips, come to mind. A juicer breaks down the fibrous body of the plant releasing the nutrient rich juice within. Drinking this juice is a direct feed of vitamins, minerals and phyto-nutrients that are instantly digested. Probably the best choice juicer is the Omega Juicer as it is also able to make pasta, ice cream and start the process of making tofu.

These appliances are a great investment and make the commitment to life long plant based nutrition that much easier.
