Collagen from Plants

Collagen is a long chain amino acid protein that is highly abundant in the human body. It is present in the skin, bones, hair and nails. It provides elasticity to skin, makes hair stronger, and reinforces connective tissues. Moreover healthy production of collagen helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sustains youthful looking skin. Collagen is also found in the walls of the intestines and therefore benefits good digestion. Collagen benefits the strength of cartilage joints throughout the body. With all of the health benefits offered by collagen it is fortunate that there are many plant based foods that enhance the body’s ability to make its own collagen.

Garlic. Naturally high in sulfur this facilitates the production of collagen and rebuilding of damaged collagen.

Cabbage. High in vitamin C and other antioxidants cabbage can protect collagen from free radical damage as well as preventing damage to collagen stores in the body.

Orange colored foods. Foods like carrots, butternut squash and pumpkins are high in vitamin A which is beneficial for protecting collagen from damage as well as encourage the production of more collagen.

Dark leafy greens. Consuming a wide range of these vegetables enhances the ability of the body to produce more collagen and make use of the protein effectively. These are also rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.

A great natural vegan source of collagen is Irish moss. This substance is a sea vegetable that offers a wide range of health benefits but its greatest trait is that it contains high amounts of easy to digest collagen. See a full write up about Irish moss here.
