What about B12?

Frequently people who choose to become Vegan are faced with the question of vitamin B12. This is a serious issue because B12 is needed for proper brain and nervous system health and development. Many who oppose exclusive plant based nutrition think they have found a figurative Achilles heel in Vegan nutrition.
Though let us take a moment and consider the source of B12. B12 is produced in nature only by prokaryotes in the form of certain bacteria and archaea. In a natural setting the B12 would be exposed to food crops through soil and fresh water sources. The crops would be harvested and eaten by people and would would metabolize the B12 nutrients. Due to modern sanitation and cultivation practices most food crops are not in this natural situation so there is no exposure to the B12 nutrient. Because of this people, especially Vegans, need a good source of B12 to properly supplement their nutrition.

It is widely believed that B12 can only be obtained from meat food products. What is not so widely understood is that agricultural farmers feed their livestock a vitamin B12 supplement. This reinforces the fact that animals do not produce their own B12. Despite this faulty claim the U.S.A. is one of the highest consumers of meat foods in the world, but many Americans are still deficient in the B12 nutrient. Either only select farmers feed their livestock the supplement or animal foods are a poor source of B12. Whatever the case may be it seems that everyone needs to find a good source of vitamin B12.

Fortunately there is a wide range of quality supplements available in tablet and capsule form. View this video below to find out about the different types of B12 supplements.
