Feed your Skin.

Many plant foods are extremely healthy. They can provide a full host of vitamins and minerals and help maintain optimum health of the human body. Ever considered what some of these foods can do for the outside of the body though? Skin is the biggest organ on the human body after all. Providing a direct feed of nutrients will benefit long term skin health. So here are a couple of plant based foods that human skin will happily devour.

Oatmeal. Oats are a highly nourishing food and a great source of protein and carbohydrates. Oats also possess antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. This can reduce skin swelling and irritation. For people who struggle with acne problems, applying oats to face skin will absorb excess skin oil which can reduce the incidence of breakouts. When ground into a fine powder oats can be used to effectively exfoliate. Invest in a rotating skin brush to approach all angles of the face when exfoliating with the oat powder. Rolled oats can be used as a full beauty mask. Simply cook a single serving of rolled oats in clean water. Allow the oats to cool down to slightly warm (never hot, do not burn yourself!). Clean and exfoliate face, then apply oatmeal all over face and allow to sit for 10-15 minutes and wash off with cool water. This mask should reduce any swelling and skin irritability and soak up acne causing excess oils. Oatmeal can also be used in bath water for similar effects all over the body. Fill a tied off mesh sack with one or two servings of oatmeal place in a large vessel like a bowl and allow to soak with warm water for a couple of hours or or boil in a pot on low heat for a few minutes. Remove the sack and pour the oat soaked water into your bath. This makes for a very soothing and relaxing bath.
Seaweed, specifically Bladderwrack is a common type of kelp used in food. The seaweed has the appearance of long leaves covered in tiny sacks hence its name. The kelp is known for its ability to aid in weight loss and improve heart health. Bladderwrack contains minerals and antioxidants that keep skin healthy but even better is the ability of this seaweed to slow the aging process. The antioxidants help skin look young, and reduce age spots and blemishes. Bladderwrack helps tighten the skin lessening the appearance of wrinkles. Its is available in powder as well as full leaf form.

When mixed with oats bladderwrack can be applied to skin as a mask. Try soaking the whole leaf bladderwrack in water for a couple of hours then blitz in a blender. Combine the seaweed slurry with oatmeal and apply to face and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes. The combined effect of the two ingredients will feed the skin an abundance of nutrients healing and improving skin condition.

Skin is a highly absorbent organ and requires proper nutrition just like the inside of the body. Consider this the next time you are applying a moisturizer to your body. If you can't safely eat that why would you put it on your skin?
